Can I use a 12 volt solenoid to replace a 6v. My battery is 12 v. Tractor was converted from 6 to 12. I assumed solenoid was 12 since battery was. When I removed old solenoid discovered it was 6 and I had ordered a 12 v solenoid.

es, if of same "type", where ground to the small terminal activates it. If you get one that requires voltage applied to small terminal to activate, it won't work as a replacement.

Mine was hooked up with a wire from the small terminal to the foot switch. There was a wire also from the battery + connection to the ignition key switch.

ounds OK, although, Battery+ to ign sw will generally pass through ammeter.

Actually it might go thru ammeter and then to keys with.
I don't remember but I did not remove or disconnect any of that. Just the solenoid connections. Thanks.
