Odd Serial number?

Tracmanford

New User
Been looking around for some time now on the internet about 8n serial numbers. Best of my understanding the stamping on an 8n should read 8N*****. I have 4 numbers"1179". Location is just right of oil filter, and also on tag located on the top rear of engine, under battery tray. Wire wheeling around and removing the red paint also reveals old blue paint which is odd. I'm new to the Ford n series, any help in explaining what I have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

my best guess is that u need to use the wire wheel again. immediately to the right of the oil filter mounting bracket, on the raised rectangular area at the top of the block, is the correct place to look.

Those stampings are larger in size and deeper or harder hit than the serial number on my 8N. I'm not a tractor guru but in the auto world, it is not uncommon for serial numbers to be missing/machined off/worn away and machine shop stamps put on in place of them. Not saying this is what happened to you, but it's not uncommon in the auto world.

What is the casting ID look like on the block? Left side of the engine back towards the bellhousing.

Tracmanford,I looks like you have a industrial or a replacement engine.Does it have a "8N" casting mark on the left side directly to the rear of the starter?

looks exactly like yours in the photo. The engine also has a "vent" on the right side of engine I've never seen on another

These engines were sold by Ford and used in
a number of industrial applications
(combines, water pumps, etc) As you can
see, it has a boss on the block for a fuel
pump. The Model A engines were also used in
industrial applications and most are
identifiable by a diamond stamped on the
timing cover and bell housing. But, that's
not the case with the N engine. Best you can
figure is that your engine didn't come off
the assembly line with the tractor.
