Gas tank /reserve tank

Heres whats going on, I put gas in the tank it shows 2 inches on a ruler, Im brush hogging for maybe 30 min it acts like it ran out of gas, so I open the knob all the way up and its fine, later I check the gas its down to an inch on the stick so I put gas in and open knob 2 full turns brings up to 2 inch again, same thing again run out, wouldnt you thing 2 inches of gas would be enough gas before it runs out.(I would have put in more gas but needed the gas for the mower)

Not likely. The stand pipe on the sediment bowl/shutoff assembly extends into the tank by about 2 inches.

Thus you running out and putting it on reserve. Put more gas in it.

Note the standpipe and screen on top of the sediment bowl.

these are the classic signs of the sediment bowl's reserve pickup being clogged. i ran out with an inch of gas more times than i'd like to remember before i finally figured out the problem.

if u like, u can remove the sediment bowl and try to clean the reserve fuel path, or u can replace the sediment bowl. a word of warning: i replaced mine this last offseason because i wasn't real confident of the cleaning job i did on the old one, and the reserve pickup on the NEW one was already plugged before i ever got the tractor out of the pole barn. it was allowing fuel thru, but only a trickle. the old one's screen inside the tank was missing, but the new one plugged/restricted with a brand new screen on it.

i've decided to just live with that unusable inch of gas in the tank, i am in no hurry to replace or clean the bowl assembly again.

alve passages are small, easily clogged. You can remove tank cap, disconnect fuel line at carb & apply compresses air to blow back thru sediment bowl/valve assy & clear out the bug parts, seeds, grass, rust and all will be well until all that stuff finds its way back to the same spot.

JMOR, If I blow out the line like your saying the knob on the sediment bowl should be open, is that right.

"If I blow out the line like your saying the knob on the sediment bowl should be open, is that right."

yes. if the valve is closed, the pressure u are applying will never get to what's plugged.

"I will get the air compressor going tomorrow."

Keep in mind that as JMOR said that's a temporary fix.
2 hours, 2 days, 2 weeks, who knows.
Easier to just add more gas and not use the reserve.

Better yet to clean or replace the tank.
I've been working on an old Farmall M for a friend.
It needed the gas tank boiled out and resealed. Or replaced.
By the time the shop was done with it the price was $400.
It no longer has it's original paint and will need to be painted.

A NEW gas tank for an N is only [b:56e228066f]$150[/b:56e228066f] and will save you repeated
carb cleanings/rebuilds with their inherent costs and down time.

Royse your right 2 hours 2 days
2 weeks temporary fix, I have
had the sediment bowl off before
but time is not on my side right
now,for the time being I will
just put more gas in the tank, I
have 11 acres to brush hog
before deer season starts, I
know the sediment bowl job is
not a big job, but my luck is a
half hour job ends up an all day
job.
