Trade my 8n for farmall 400 with loader

I have a ford 8n that I might trade for a farmall 400 with wide front end and tricycle . it also has a loader on it step through . the craigslist post says TA needs to be adjusted and rear tires are whether checked.what do you guys think . loader need some welding .southwest mi craigslist paw paw

I think a 400 was the replacement for the Super H.
It is substantially more tractor than an N. Like close to double the hp. It will be a tall ungainly thing if you are used to an N. I would guess they are about equal in value to a good N. I looked on searchtempest and saw several in the $2500-$3500 range. They didn't come with 3 PH but it could be added. But if it doesn't have it it likely won't be be cheap to add it or convert the fast hitch (or whatever it's called) I doubt fast hitch inmplements for it will be as ubiquitous as 3 point stuff is. Were it me I would do your homework on that Torque Amplifier. Ask on the Farmall board about it. I think that can be pricey to repair. I guess I'm just a Ford Man and given the choice between a 400 and a Ford 800 or 900 (which is a comparably sized row crop) I would opt for the Ford. They will be far more familiar to you and have at least as good a reputation for reliability and probably better for parts availability.

I am assuming this is the machine and it is a [b:41955e82c8]LOT[/b:41955e82c8] bigger tractor.

Do find out exactly what the TA needs before deciding as that can be a pricey repair. The loader has been heavily used/abused and clearly needs some work from a good welder. Lots of niggly little things like hoses and such need some TLC and will begin to add up $$$$ wise. That said if you need something that size and you can trade an 8N and a little cash for it that looks like a pretty good deal. My uncle has owned his 350 for 30+ years and loves the power down 3pt hitch setup. There is no way he would trade down to an 8N ;-)

The 400 is a lot more tractor. The scary part is the TA. Several things you need to know. The early TA's when in low going downhill while not under a load WILL FREEWHEEL! And as someone else stated expensive to repair. Repairing the TA requires splitting the tractor. If you have it done expect somewhere north of 2,000.

The tractor pictured has the Fast Hitch system on it. Fast Hitch implements are hard to find and expensive when you do. IH refused to allow implement makers to make implements for that system so most farmers used drawbar implements. The tractor in the picture has IPTO too. That was optional. Very nice to have. It also has live hydraulics. The loader on that is not a digging implement.

It was not made to replace the Super H. It was made to replace the Super M. 50 PTO HP.

Thanks guys I really won't a loader and be able to brush hog tall weeds. The tractor has the 3 point conversion arms

That would do the job ;-) Go test drive it and check out the TA to see if really is just an adjustment problem. The TA is nothing more than a "shift on the fly" under drive that drops you down a 1/2 gear when you need more torque. As Rick said early models free-wheeled which can lead to "oh-chit" moments ;-)

The seller says it needs adjusting which is just like adjusting the clutch on your 8N. If it won't lock in when you shift it you can try to adjust it right then and there. Here is a quick video tutorial on how that is done:

My guess is the seller would have adjusted it already if that is all it needs. If you can't get it working by adjusting it he is selling a 4 speed tractor (e.g. no TA) and you have a pretty good bargaining chip for the trade. Like any clutch system TA repairs are pretty common but it is a substantial job and can be pricey depending on exactly what needs to be replaced. The good news is they are plentiful. Here is what they look like. The second picture shows one with the clutch still attached to the left side. They are both on eBay right now for $158 and $299 respectively. Both "worked when removed from tractor". YMMV ;-)
