OK I'm having no success posting in the box below-HELP

Thsi is what I tried 4 times

After reading Tip #43 www.yesterdaystractors.com/articles/artint268.htm which reads which reads:
To jumpstart a 6-volt tractor with a 12-volt battery, put the tractor in neutral, block the wheels and turn the key on. Place one jumper cable on the stud on the starter. Make sure the tractor is in neutral, because when you place the other jumper cable on the frame of the tractor, the starter will engage and turn the engine over.

What I am curious about is, why isn't it specified which cable is placed on the starter stud? Can I assume the stud is the negative cable? This is a standard 6 volt system.

I think you are trying to post an invalid link so it won't let it post.
No guarantee of that though.

If you are asking this question: "What I am curious about is, why isn't it specified which cable is placed on the starter
stud? Can I assume the stud is the negative cable? This is a standard 6 volt system."

The answer is, "it does not matter"! The reason is the starter circuit is separate from the ignition circuit.

Thank you HCooke, I am going to try to jump start an 8N that's been sitting for 3 years off my 12v diesel truck.

Second question, if you don't mind. Since this is a gas engine, can I shoot some starter fluid into the carb? My thoughts are I'd know then if by turning it over if there is something seriously wrong internally making horrible noises, or if it sounds quiet and normal.

" I am going to try to jump start an 8N that's been sitting for 3 years off my 12v diesel truck. "

Do not attempt to turn the engine over. You could break the rings if they are rusted to the cylinder walls.

Try turning it over by hand. If it turns, then pull the plugs and add a few tablespoons of motor oil to each cylinder. That will lube the walls & aid in compression.

If it does not turn by hand, pull all plugs, add a cup or more of automatic transmission fluid (ATF ) or Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) in each cylinder.

Start looking for mouse/hornet nests in places like the tail pipe & carb breather hose.

Dress the points w/ card stock & add at least 2 gallons of fresh gas.

starting fluid directly in the carb is fine.

Check the oil & coolant.

and continuing with john's theme, i cringe whenever i pull up a thread here and it's obvious that posts are missing - in this case, the original question. i see people answering a blank post. now, i figure they're not psychic, so the forum software here is showing some things to some people and other things to others.

i have to wonder how many times i missed a reply to something i asked because of this.

this dual-format forum does not work well (that's the polite version).

"i cringe whenever i pull up a thread here and it's obvious that posts are missing"

When posted on Classic view the forum allows certain things.
But when it translates to modern view they are not allowed.
Thus, they show up blank. Happens with disallowed words, etc.
On modern view if you tried to post that disallowed word it would
tell you that you had a disallowed word and not let you post it.

ahhh, ty. that explains this one and some of the others. sometimes i'm seeing a specific post, either the first or last in a thread, on the index page, but when i go there, there is no such post. not a blank post, but no post by that author at all.

and that makes me wonder how often it happens that more is missing, but since it wasn't the first or last post in a thread, i had no way of knowing it was there (somewhere) to begin with.

What I find really curious is that on modern view, for a blank post
like this one, if I hover the mouse over the title it still shows the
preview of the post so I can read it. At least the first part of it.
Open it, and it's blank. Switch to classic view and I can see it.

ahhh, good catch. i hadn't noticed that.
