Why are some 8-9N engines so much quiter than others. Are there different mufflers that you can buy, or is it in the timing of the engine. Just
wondering after hearing the difference while watching a tractor parade.

Mufflers definitely make a difference John
I'm not sure if that's what you heard, but they're not all the same.
Not even taking into account the difference between horizontal
and vertical exhausts. Stanley mufflers are loud in my experience.

Excuse the ignorance, but how does a reverse flow muffler work? At the 1000 ft level it sounds like it turns the exhaust system into the intake system...
