8N lift arms only go up 1/2 way

I just sold a '49 8N and bought a '53 8N. The lift arms on the 3-point on the new tractor only go up about half way when I have the position lever all of the way up. My older '49 arms went up twice as high as these on the new tractor. This is with no implements installed on the arms. Can you guys give me some direction on what to investigate? Thanks much.

Welcome to the Forum Bryce. I'm sure someone on here will give you the advice you are looking for on the lift arm.

I'm interested to see what people say about what year 8N you have.

From what little I know, either you have a 48-52 8N or a 53 Golden Jubilee. The only reason I responded is that the lady I bought my 8N from insisted it was a 53 although from what research I've done, it is a 52.

Thanks for the reply. Year situation sounds similar. Guy I bought it from swears it is a '53 but I thought they only made the 8N through '52.

First, check the obvious. Have you checked the fluid level? (see tips 3 & 4)

Is it in position control or draft control? (see tip # 58)

If that doesn't work, try the quadrant adjustment. Loosen the 4 bolts & tap it to the rear to get more height out of the lift arms.

If that doesn't solve the problem see tip # 16. Post back w/ what you find.

" and bought a '53 8N."

No, not really.

If it's an 8N, it's not a 1953.

Flathead engine, 4 speed transmission?

Find the serial number (tip # 71)

That will tell you the year of the engine.

John Smith's web page will tell you what year(s) the rest of the tractor might be.

Thanks Bruce. I did check the fluid level and it was normal. I will also check the tips indicated and report back what I find.

You guys are the greatest! I did verify that the hydraulics were set to position control. Loosening the 4 screws on the quadrant and tapping the block backward, toward the rear axle did the trick. Arms now travel to the full up position which I am used to. Hard to believe a very slight movement of that block can have such a huge impact on the height of the arms. I only moved it like a 64th of an inch, or less!
I might have some clutch questions for you all once I have reviewed the list of 75 tips and service manual.
Thanks again.
