I have a 1951 8n the hydraulic works good when
tractor is running when not running the hydraulic
will go down what is the most common cause

The seals in your lift piston are leaking.
Not a big deal unless transporting an implement with the pto shut off. Then leaking down is kind of a pia cause you have to engage the pto to lift it again.
Normally though your pump is putting out something like 2.5 gpm and your lift cylinder only holds about a pint of oil so there's plenty of flow to over come the loss to leakage.
If it bothers you pull the lift cover off and renew the lift piston seals.
Not a bad job but helps to have a helper to lift the cover off as it's heavy.
The advantage a tractor with live hydraulics has is the hyd pump is run off tbe engine - not the pto.
So you can raise the lift anytime the engine is running and not worry about the pto.
