8N brake problem

1948 right brake hangs up and drags when the pedal is depressed. Back up a foot and you can go forward without the drag till you use that pedal again. FO 4 manual says that two retracting springs are used on the left and only one on the right. Why are two springs needed on the left? Mine has always had just one on each side and both worked fine till a short time ago. Brake shoes are not very old, properly adjusted and show some shiny spots in the right drum but not any shiny marks in the left drum. I seem to remember reading about a similar problem on this forum some time ago, but am unable to access the search part. Retracting springs on both sides are in good shape and appear to be hooked in the right places. Any suggestions as to what"s wrong?
Thanks, Tom/Idaho

Tom,Put two retracting springs on the right side to return the petal fully. The two were put on the left to compensate for all the extra linkages. If needed you could even put stronger springs on both sides.

You may also want to make sure the backing plate is in good
shape and that the shoes aren't moving. One of mine sheered
the bolt heads off and also broke the tab off of the post that the
shoes set against.

Thanks to both of you for responding. All bolts were still intact on the backing plate. SO, I added another spring to the right side and that cured the problem. While this fixed the problem I was having I"m still curious what caused the problem. Worn out bushings or slack somewhere I would imagine. Oh well it works now.
Thanks again, Tom/Idaho
