dumbest question ever???

anyone ever hear or see of someone mounting a small dry type air cleaner directly to a MS carb. ? would it even work ?

I'VE seen them mounted to the later series tractors but not the N tractors. You would have to put an elbow on it to get it away from the exhaust pipe. The oil bath system is a better system anyway,IMO

seen it, heard of it.

Your properly serviced oil bath air cleaner should do a better job considering all conditions.

I agree that the oil bath system works better.
For testing, a motorcycle air filter fits and is better than nothing.

You see a lot of them at tractor pulls. Not on Ns because no one pulls Ns but on everything else.

Yep, they sure work better! That's why tractors built in the 60's with paper filters like the Farmall 826 or JD 4020 diesels ONLY get 10,000 hours or more life out of the engine between overhauls! The gassers from that era got only 5,000 hours or so because of those terrible dry filters too......what's the average interval for an 8N being used for actual work like tillage? Actually oil bath isn't bad at all. But dry paper filters are as efficient in cleaning the air and increases air flow therefore the efficiency of the engine.

The down side of oil bath is disposal of the used oil and whatever is used to flush the mesh.

The down side to dry filters is the cost of the filter.

Both do a good job with a slight advantage in the dry paper filter by increasing airflow.

Don't read opinion stuff, research it and then make a decision.

I wonder if a filter from a skid steer could be adapted? I'm not looking at converting my Ns. Just wondering??? Most of those have a housing that is remotely mounted with pipes to the intake much like the oil bath setup on an N. IIRC older TORO ground master mowers with the liquid cooled diesel had a filter housing about the size of the N filter that was remotely mounted too.

Now I'm wondering?????? Just as an experiment????

According to what I can find with some research the myth about the oil bath being better was started by old timers when the auto industry started to change over to dry filters. Seems they didn't like the idea of throwing the filter away. Mechanics of that day added to it because it cut down on time needed to perform a service. Had to do with money in their pocket and job security. Again this is according to what I found doing a little research.

When I started doing the research I thought that dry paper was much better than oil bath. But the test results I found showed they are just about evenly matched for cleaning. Where the rub comes in is how much they flow. There the dry paper is better.

I was/am looking at dry air filter primarily for ease of service to unit. my machines get used very little.
