The govenor on my 8n hasn't throttled up under load for a while now. Now the acceleration won't adjust (stays at the high end. What's involved in replacing or repairing it.

eplacement is as easy as 2 bolts (don't put long bolt back where short belongs!!!) and two slip on linkage rods. Rebuild is a bit more involved, but doable.

Mike........would it surprize you to learn that for $25 (cheap) you can gitt the I&T FO-4 manual that has pictures about repairing the governor??? And that our host, YesterdaysTractors sells governor parts. Its good to support yer host, eh? ........respectfully, Dell

Are you sure it's the governor & not the throttle rod or linkage? It would be a shame to rebuild/replace a governor for $100-$350 only to find out the problem was a $14 throttle plate & 17 cent ball bearing.

There are three ways to check to check the operation of the governor. Get the throttle lever at it's lowest point (engine ideling) Then, start tapping the throttle lever slowly open. How far does the throttle move before the engine speeds up? Lack of low speed throttle response (like about 1/3 of the throttle) is the classic symptom of a bad or out of adjustment governor. Next test, put it in gear at about 1/4 throttle, put your foot on both brakes & let the clutch out. The engine should throttle up as the governor arm opens the throttle plate in the carb to compensate for the load on the engine. Next test, w/ the tractor running, pull on the rod going to the carb; does the governor pull back? If that does not work, get out the I&T FO4 manual & check out the 'adjusting governor' paragraph. Finally, before I paid $200 or more for a governor, I'd pull it off & open it up. It could just need new balls & races.

If the governor is the problem, you have 3 choices:

1. Get the I&T manual as Dell said & adjust it or replace the wear parts.

2. Have it rebuilt (nnalert's rebuilds them)

3. Replace it (this site has new ones)

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I'm having the same symptoms where the governor will not increase the throttle under load.

I have very good low RPM throttle response but when under a load, the RPM's fall off and never try to recover. As soon as I either lift the blade or push in the clutch, then the RPM's come back to where they were before (or higher if I had to pump the throttle up while under the load).

I'm new to owning my N (or a tractor in general) so I'm at a loss for where to start.

Thanks all!
