battery won't engage starter

Hello folks, it has been a while since I posted.

I have an issue with my 1949 Ford 8N Six volt Front distributor.

IF I go direct to the starter with a jump box, it starts quickly and runs like a dream.

If I hook up my brand new 6 volt battery with nice recently cleaned battery cable ends, I turn on the key, press the clutch, push the
starter button, and CLICK.

I have put battery on charger. Is there something else I should be looking at?

Thanks for reading

Tap the solenoid with a hammer. If that doesn't work, jump the solenoid.

Got a hydrometer? See tip # 49. Sometimes batteries are bad off the shelf.

I would check where the cable connects to the chassis for your ground, and if you can try jumping out the solenoid. I'm not familiar with the 8N, but doesn't it have a two post solenoid that you can jumper across to start?

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your prompt replies.

I put the battery charger on the battery, checked the battery wire connections to the tractor and cleaned one, and got an appropriate sized hammer and tapped on the solenoid.

Not checking between each action, I regret I cannot tell you which one did the trick, however. IT STARTS!!!!!!!
I even diagnosed and repaired my headlights!!!! IT WAS A GOOD DAY!!!

Thank again for reading & replying!!

It is a blessed thing when the little tractors start right up and do the work. Recently changed plugs in mine, new copper plug wires, new HD battery 6 volt, cleaned cables good. Wow--can I own and use the tractor 20 more years and not be griping all the time? Yes---
