Ford front mount coil / resistor

I have been having trouble getting a new to me 8n to run right. I've put everything new in this tractor that I can think of. But the only thing that will make it run correctly is if I bypass the ballast resistor. I tried using a new resistor and it runs poorly. It will not accelerate or pull any kind of load with a resistor in it but will run perfectly fine without the resistor. It is still 6 V positive ground and has a brand-new tractor supply coil. Question is, are some coils being made that do not need a resistor? I have even tried a Chrysler style resistor. Equals weak spark. The coil that I bought was in a an in opened 6 V coil box.

Which is the likely cause of your problem.

TSC sells good chicken feed & shirts. Their parts, not so good.

Take a look at the picture.

Which resistor are you using?

If your coil is 2 ohms or so, it's a "6 volt" coil & needs the OEM ballast resistor. (as in the picture) and no other resistor.

If your coil is getting close to 3 ohms, and you are using the OEM ballast resistor, you could easily have too much resistance in the circuit.

Measure the resistance of the coil.

Sounds like a bad coil. Take it back and have them check it with a "digital" meter. If good it should register 1.2 ohms.
Or try a known good one, from like a friend. Analog meters do not register that low of ohms.

Sounds like it is a wiring problem. Is it wired 6 volt positive ground? GOOGLE JMOR's pictograms to see correct wring setups...or email me...it is open...

ounds to me like you DID get it running right I it were mine, I would measure coil current. If it were mine and I didnt know as much as I do, I would run it until it stopped running right and not look for troubles.
