8n 3 point and pto issues

Hi everyone the other day I finished rebuilding my ford 8n all I had left to do is change the transmission fluid. The fluid that was in it was very watery and milky colored but the pto and 3 point still worked. I drained the fluid from all 3 plugs, then I refilled it with new Traveller Ford Tractor All Mineral 90 Transmission Fluid from tsc. I bought 3-2 gallon jugs of this and I put all 6 gallons of it in. I know it only calls for 5 gallons but it didn't look like it covered all the gears very well, it looks like the tank is only half full. There r no leaks and the fluid dip stick shows full. Now the issue is the pto and 3 point is not working now, any ideas what it could be, could to much fluid cause this?

Seriously now......

The manual calls for 5 gallons and you add 6 because it didn't cover the gears? Do you think the people that designed the tractor and wrote the manual just picked 5 because it was their favorite number?

You better hope it's got good seals or your next job will be replacing the brakes.

Drain a gallon out. Let it run a while with the pto engaged to prime the pump.

Thank you sound guy for ur help this is my first tractor iv owned, I searched the web for how to put pto in gear for ford 8n, and that was my problem I didn't know u had to push the clutch in to put it in gear I thought you just pulled the lever. The pto works and the 3point lowers and raises

Thank you for the help

"Check out tip # 39."

And I'd still drain off that extra gallon (or gallon and a half)
of fluid. Keep it for when you need to top off future leaks.

Shaddiesel, pull the bottom bolt out of one of the round
inspection covers on the side of the housing. The one the
PTO shifter runs through or the one on the other side.
Make sure the hole is clean through, then fill the fluid until
it just starts to come out of that hole.
Mark your dipstick as "full" where the oil level is at that point.
After that you can use the dipstick to judge the level.

on single and dual stage clutch machines with transmission pto, you need to clutch to engage the pto.

On independent pto machines, you do not need to clutch to engage pto

You said that you drained fluid from three drains but how many places did you add fluid. There are three separate sumps. The middle one would do better with hydraulic oil.

"There are three separate sumps."

Not on an 8N showcrop, you're thinking of the NAA and up I think.

OK, then why three drains?

Good question. My WAG is so you could drain the water off the
bottom of each section without actually changing the oil. Or,
possibly, to drain each lower portion of the 5 gallon sump completely.

On a bright note the one in the rear is a smaller pipe plug so if
you drain that one first you can usually get most of it in a pan.
I use an old square washtub. Then open the bung sized plugs
from aft to fore to drain the rest and hope to catch the remainder.

since there are casting webs between the bolted sections.. without the separate drains you'd likely have a gallon of oil in the
trans, then some pooled at the hyds section / diffy.

I'd say so it's easier to drain.
