Will these points work in my 8N?

i decided to stop off at O'riellys today and get some better points (Borg Warner) than I had previously installed and this is what they sold me.
Am I crazy or will these work on a front mount?
Part number A101P

Those are side mount points. Frontmount
points are 2 pieces.

Tell them you have a 1940 Ford 4 cylinder
pickup truck. That's a 9N engine that Henry
put in a truck. It wasn't very popular.

NAPA has Echlin and Bluestreak points. Both
work fine.

Did you give the parts guy a part number to
cross or was he just guessing?

Agree with what Bruce is saying but I would add that I never buy any with the plastic rubbing block. I get mine from NAPA.

Ok thank you Bruce! I knew they didnt look like the points that I had previously installed so I knew something was amiss.

Yea, I didnt give him any more info than, Ford 8N. Thanks for the heads up on the truck info. I go that route with them. Appreciate it!

I'll look around and see if we have a NAPA here. not sure. We pretty dominated by O'reillys around here.

Ive read the Blue Streak is the best?

You may need to order them from here or
nnalert's if you can't find a decent set. As
in not plastic. The cheap ones don't last
and it's hard to get them open to .015.

In addition to what the other guys said, see if they can cross
the Echlin or BlueStreak numbers if they have a non-plastic set.

Echlin #CS35
Standard Ignition BlueStreak #FD-6769X

That was my biggest problem with the last set I bought (red and white pkg- can't think of brand (tisco maybe?))
No matter how loose I had everything you could barely get the .015 gauge in between the points.

Thank you Royse. I appreciate that info! That will come in quite handy

Last set I bought were Standard. I put em in and set them while I was in a rush. They failed rather quickly, the points didn't match up, off by about 1/2. It's EI now!

You're welcome.

Rick you have mentioned in the past that you like to buy locally, as do I.
You also mentioned that you have a local dealer that sells Tisco parts.

I ordered a set of "Standard BlueStreak" points from a very well
known Tisco dealer once. They came with a plastic rubbing block.
They were obviously NOT the same points I buy at the local, non-Tisco parts place.
I don't know if that's what you got last time or not, but possibly.

You didn't get "Borg Warner" points, they got out of that business years ago.

You got "BWD", made by SMP (Standard Motor Parts).

As to ignition parts, they make:

Standard

Standard "Blue Streak"

BWD

GP Sorenson

Neihoff

NAPA Echlin

And several others.

Basically it's a deal so you can have three chain auto parts stores in the same town and the "SMP" points will be in a different-colored box with a different part number and name at each!

The local dealer with the TISCO parts is a parts store. They ordered the points from the company not TISCO. Reason is they have had problems with TISCO electrical parts so if possible they order from the company they are linked to.

Got me a set of NAPA Echlin. Thanks everyone.
Hopefully that will fix my tractor.
Right now I'm elbow deep changing out a water pump on my wifes car so the tractor gets put on the back burner. But cant have the wife and daughter stranded somewhere.

Incompetent parts person.

his computer or book should have told him there was an engine difference and listed 2 sets of points by years.

they fact that it / he didn't, would mean I would not shop there anymore, and then let the company know they have bad staff or
resources for their staff, and that it is costing them business.

Dude, get yourself a pertronix unit and go 12 volt and be done with it..............you'll never have to do anything but change the plugs every five years or so ever again........make your life easier

I still have one hanging on the peg board for a side mount.
A brand new one that Pertronix sent me after mine fell
apart in about a week. Maybe 8 hours run time.

Kudos to Pertronix support, they were great.
They sent this new one right out to replace the failed
one but I still had to wait on it to get here in the mail.
Luckily, I had the old points to put back in.

Those same old points are still in there and running fine.
Maybe when those points fail I'll try putting the EI back in.
Maybe not. I didn't notice any difference in starting or running
with it compared to starting and running with quality points.
At these low RPMs it runs fine either way.

THE POINT IS I have never heard of a Petronix unit failing and once installed you don't ever have to replace it like you do points........I would never put points in anything I own again......I have a pertronix unit in My 36 Ford pickup with a Yblock in it.........and I have a unit in my 1970 Fiat Spider and never had to go after them in years...........

if you've never heard of one fail, you've been trying not to hear.

There must be a post a week or 3 a month involving failed or multiple failed pertronix units right here in this forum alone!

I have never heard of a Petronix unit failing
I just relayed the story of mine failing.

once installed you don't ever have to replace it
I had to replace it, with points, in about a week.

I've got nothing against Pertronix and certainly nothing against EI.
It is solid technology with proven reliability but they are not fail-proof
and not the end to all problems that some people claim they are.

I apologize to you folks who don't like Pertronix........I love Pertronix...........and never had a problem with them and like I said have them in three of my vehicles........I even had them (Marvin) make a prototype for my 1970 Fiat Spider 1438cc that they didn't have on the shelf.

what I love about them especially related to the tractors with front distributors.........they don't take a dump with a rain drizzle like points do.......

I got good service[4-5 years] from a set of BWD points, front mount 9n. Posted about it here and got heckled,so better for me to just use what I like and keep it to myself.

points on frontmounts that take a dump in rain are due to user error and not keeping / putting the correct gaskets in.

If you look at it.. side mount dizzy are LESS protected from rain than a front mount. I have driven home from mowing MANY times
in driving rain so hard it was difficult to see. Side dizzy getting as much rain on it as I was, and I could have been swimming.

Don't blame a part for not working because the guy driving the tractor is ham handed when it comes to maintenance.

That's like blaming McDonalds for making you fat. Seems like people are afraid of personal responsibility....

I hear ya, my most used and most beat tractor still has the points in it from when I got it.

It needs about one good rev to bang and be mowing.
