8N remote hydraulics

I recently purchased a 1950 8N, and have a question about the hydraulics. There are 2 taps in the case, 1 on the top of diff and other under the seat. There is a hose connected from the test port to the tap under the seat. I believe this modification was done to add a remote cylinder and not have to chain the lift down?

I need to re-route the hose because the Low range lever hits the hose (was a nice surprise to find out it had the Howard low range). I have a couple of questions: What would happen if I engaged the PTO with this hose disconnected, will it build pressure and something blow, or is there an internal pressure relief? Is the fitting on the diff also a return the test port hose could be connected to? Thanks

This is almost certainly what you have. If you disconnect, then the hyd pump will be running against the relief valve pressure all the time if touch control is moved to lift position, which would be very bad for both pump & relief valve. Of course your 3 point lift would not function. You could remove the red plug shown (remove lift cover to access) and plug hole where el is under seat & thereby return all to as it was before mods.

The easy solution would be to remove the Howard and sell it to me!

iN YOUR picture i cannot tell where the hose that is hitting the howard handle goes. It looks like the other one goes to pump test port. But it sounds like JMOR has it nailed.

The hose from the top fitting wraps around the back of the seat and goes down to the test port. Yes, I think JMOR explained it.

I think JMOR has identified your modification and explained the operation. I believe it to be an "improvement" that gives you more flexibility over the plumbing and would leave it as is. Do not disconnect the hose unless you understand the operation and make the appropriate substitute connections. Reroute the hose run if it is a problem with the Howard shifter.

did tell you how to return it to factory, but TOH certainly does have a point, in that if you might ever want to add a feature such as hydraulic top link or any other extra, I would not undo the advantage the is already there. Just re-route the connection/hose.

After looking a little closer at the picture and re-reading dgraham's written description I am not so sure the modification is what we thought. Are there two hoses and another connection (e.g. top of differential) we cannot see?????

Thanks, just wanted to verify how it was internally connected. A few years ago I installed a backhoe on a Yanmar, and the quick connect fitting failed, blocked the line and blew the weak link which was the backhoe valves. It now has a relief valve.
