Putting ring gear on flywheel at home

While your stove WILL NOT get ring gear hot enough, this is STILL WITHOUT a Torch! You must get ring gear up to about 650-800 before you can get it put on the flywheel on 9n! Those who choose to believe it isn't possible at home without a torch are 100% incorrect! I would place flywheel in freezer for few hours then walk out and fire up your GRILL (which is capable of getting up to 800!). Takes maybe 10-30 mins to get ring gear up to 650-800. Now while this is heating take time to get a place and tools/gloves to place flywheel (wood works GREAT). Make sure you can HANDLE the hot ring gear safely to get it on top of flywheel (2 set pliers or heat gloves!. Now always have a 2x4x6" and hammer ready in case your grill will only get up to 650, it will require you to tap ring gear against matting surface, just walk around hitting ring gear till it gets against machine stop.Take out flywheel from freezer place close to grill on blocks of solid wood when ring gear is hot/ready, get pliers ready to pick up ring gear(make sure you already know proper direction.Place it ring gear on flywheel and it should sink onto if temp is about 800.At 650 your going to have to use hammer and block of wood to knock/tap ring gear on, start going around clockwise tapping and it will move down to where it should rest against machine service stop. Then let it cool normally on own and your done. This is 100% TRUE so do not let others who attempt it try to tell you its not possible!Just to INSTALL , DOABLE at home!

Good instructions - Thanks --one side note: Be sure the ring gear is placed on the flywheel so that the beveled end of the ring gear teeth are facing away from the engine side of the flywheel.

I have replaced several ring gears in my time. I just heated the old one up to remove it then heated the new one until I could get it on with channel locks. You have to be careful and heat the ring evenly with a torch slowly or it will lose it's temper. Never had a problem with any of them.

I had my flywheel surfaced and the machine shop only charged an additional $10 to install the new ring gear. I had no luck at all even at higher temps. My ring gear seems to be nice and solid so now have to ponder whether or not to do some tack welds just to be certain. Are you adding tack welds ?
