8n steering shaft bearing

What holds the lower bearing on to an early 8n steering shaft? I took the shaft out of the steering gear box, found nothing holding the bearing on to the shaft. There is a race or something like it in the bottom where the shaft end rests. On the learning curve on all this. Thanks.

there COULD be a small metal clip about the size of a penny or so that will hold the thrust bearing onto the bottom of the worm
shaft so you can stick it in .. but it is NOT needed.. it serves no other purpose. you could simply take a glop of sticky
grease and put it on the shaft, glue the bearing to it and slip it in.. or do what the other 99.9% of us do and just put the
thrust bearing in the race in the bottom of the box, and then put the wormshaft in.

once the wormshaft is in, box top on, and thrust set with shim stack, the bearing cannot go anywhere.. it's captured in the race
by the shaft.

Thanks for the reply. I kind of thought that but wasn't sure. Learning as I go about this machine
