Unsticking a transmission

Trying to get my 8N into neutral. Pulled the shifter plate off to put on one that isn't worn and attempted to move the gear forks. Turns out the 2nd/4th gear plate just flops back and forth. Been looking for a better exploded view of the works so I can try and trouble shoot it at my desk a bit better.

Or it is broke. when it flips back and forth are the gears engaging? Or rather the coupling that the shift plate engages.

I'm hoping it's not broken! Detent ball is rusty so I'm going to dig it out, but the plate flops around like a wet noodle. Draining the fluid shortly to see what the issue is. I didn't get it stuck so I can't say when it happened but I CAN say the shift gate is rounded off and chipped.

No broken gear teeth above the oil level either so I'm hoping it isn't a difficult repair.

The two 'bolts' (one each side of transmission) & about half way down sides haven't been removed & replaced have they?

The locking pin and nut that holds the shift rail must be backed out for the shift rocker to be loose.

Finally got back to this thing and have found out some info;

The lower shift plate(for 1st/2nd) was out of the shift rail detent which is why it was flopping around.

The upper shift rail and lower right shift rail are stuck solid.

Leads me to believe that the transmission is stuck between 2nd and 3rd but I didn't drain enough of the oil to see to the bottom. I'll be trying Smith's recommendation of rotating the engine CCW to try and release pressure on the shift forks to get the machine back into neutral. I repaired the shift gate so there won't be any more double shifting in the future. Now I just need to be able to move this thing onto a flatbed to get it home.

Worst case scenario; could I unbolt the shift forks from the rails to try and get everything loose? This assumes relieving the pressure from the engine side does nothing to help the issue.

Drain the oil so you can at least see the parts. I would not nubolt the forks from the rails, it will not help, Once you reliaze how it all works, you will figure it out. It looks more complex than it really is.

I just put two fruitless hours into trying to loosen this thing up. 2nd/4th and 1st/3rd forks just will not budge. Pulled the starter and turned the flywheel backwards to try and loosen it up and that didn't work. Lifted a wheel and rocked it while prying at the forks and that didn't work either. The Hupp isn't binding as I can hear it engage hi/low/neutral very clearly

It may be that I just have to split the thing and work it loose that way.

Just wanted to post an update on this since today was the day it all happened to turn to the better.

I've tried everything short of splitting the tractor to get this thing unstuck and finally I broke down and bought a 4', 16# tamping bar. I ground the edges of the wedge side to a thinner profile, heated the tip in the forge and gave it a bit of an angle. Took it to the tractor and at that point I could set it between the gears and the shift collar. A few gentle whacks with the sledge hammer and I got both forks unstuck. I checked the gears and I really think I dodged a bullet with this one, no teeth look chipped and everything's tight.

I'll be putting the machine back together over the coming few days and I'll be able to put it to work!
