UPDATE: Changed throwout bearing and still noisy

I removed the transmission top cover, did some investigating, and found a likely reason for the noise that is always present--except for when the clutch pedal is pressed down:

First gear--the gear at the extreme rear of the tranny housing--is wobbling on the main shaft. I can reach down and wiggle it back and forth 1/8 to 1/4 inch, and everything else is very tight.

I assume this is not normal and could account for what I've been hearing.

If so, what is involved in fixing a wobbly first gear?

Thanks!
Jeff

Jeff, look for any side to side play in the shafts,

Got to break it at front and rear. Remove all the shift linkage, Remove input and output bearing race housings. That front bearing could be making a
lot of noise. I have one of my 8Ns that does that and I know it is the front input bearing. Been doing it for about 20 years. If it is the first gear
it will change it's tune when in first gear and loaded.

To remove gear cluster both front and back of tranny split. I know, not what you wanted to hear. Have you rotated the gear to see if it has all it's dental work, missing teeth? If so than there is usually a trickle down effect on the lower clusters. If you need gears I have a couple of trannys split and my email is open.

Thanks for the advice. I don't think there are missing teeth....but I'll know more once I open everything. I'll let you know if I need parts! Jeff
