I removed the transmission top cover, did some investigating, and found a likely reason for the noise that is always present--except for when the clutch pedal is pressed down:
First gear--the gear at the extreme rear of the tranny housing--is wobbling on the main shaft. I can reach down and wiggle it back and forth 1/8 to 1/4 inch, and everything else is very tight.
I assume this is not normal and could account for what I've been hearing.
If so, what is involved in fixing a wobbly first gear?
Thanks!
Jeff
