Starter engages when battery cables connected

Hi all. New to the forum and the wonderful world of the ford 8n.I just replaced my starter solinoid. Prior to replacement there was nothing when the starter switch was pushed. After insalling the new solinoid I went to connect the battery cables and the starter engaged and would not stop until i disconnected the negative cable tried it again with the key on and the tractor did start but the starter was still engaged.
The tractor is a front distributor. Electrical is a 1 wire 12 volt alternator and 12 volt battery. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you have correct solenoid and IF you installed it correctly, it may just be stuck closed. Whack it a good rap....most often, they will release.

How could it be installed incorectly. I will not be offended by being corrected.we all make mistakes. What should I check to make sure it was hooked up correctly?

How could it be installed incorrectly? It's
easy to install them backwards. And the
results are exactly as you described. Is the
little terminal for the starter switch
facing out or towards the block?

It's also very easy to get the wrong
solenoid.

Solenoids are not made the same. It has to be for a tractor. If the parts guy gave you one for automotive apps. It won't work.
If you connected the cables, wires to the wrong terminals it won't work. Post a photo of the solenoid.

welcome to YT, kid :)

The new solinoid is identical to the old one. I have the small post pointing toward the engine. The boz
that the part came in says 8n 1948-1952.

persuasion.
ou are welcome. If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer!

So...what's to keep it from sticking again? Not being a smarta$$. Just wondering, if they are bad will they keep doing it?

aybe, maybe not. Too high a current, resulting from a bad cable/connection/battery or starter can make one stick & once that/those problems are fixed, I have had them never stick again for decades.
