Sensor Connector

I've searched high and low and can't find the purpose of the sensor connection just above and to the right of the oil dip stick. Photo attached.

What's it for? Thanks.

(quoted from post at 15:12:06 08/13/16) Could it be an electric temperature gauge sending unit that someone stuck into the block drain hole?

That's what I figured.

The thread in the block is 1/4" National Pipe Thread.

If you want you can replace the non-functional sender/plug you have now with a standard pipe plug or a brass petcock... There's probably some good originals on ebay, or you can get one of a modern design at an auto parts store.
