New shaft and bushings, all very tight, zero movement. No change in points. Can't quite get.011 gap. Tried removing a bit of material from the lower points hold down screw hole, no change. Can the adjusting screw be replaced?

Get some good quality points or enlarge the "slot" in the stationary point that surrounds the adjusting screw with a Dremel tool.

Bob - the points are Echlin's and that whole would need more material not less, to "push" the points open farther. No?

You don't need to push the points in place with the eccentric screw.

MANY applications you points without an adjusting screw.

If there's enough room around the eccentric screw to shove the points where they needs to be, simply do that and lock 'em down with the screws.

To keep 'em from moving, it helps if the screws are in good condition and use star washers under the heads.

DO NOT replace 'em with screw too long that will extend through the breaker plate and interfere with the advance mechanism!

I just went thru this a few days ago. Puts new points in and could not get gap as large as .015. Mhy solution - I put the adjustable part of the points in the dist and pushed it as far away from the cam as possible and tightened it in place. Then I placed the moveable side of the points and the gap was more than .015!?! Then it was a simple matter to close the gap. Try it or do as Bob says.

I tried pushing them out, enlarging the adjusting screw hole inside edge, then the upper screw hole outside edge, and the lower screw hole inside edge and still couldn't get there! Settled for .011. Set the timing. Tractor starts and runs. Not happy, but tired of the 2 hr. battle.

Pretty sure I did that during one of the 10 removal, modification and replacement attempts. I'm gonna wear out this distributor if I keep it up. My reply to Bob, out of place below, is where I settled. Thanks for the suggestion.

ell, for next time........you filed 3 of the 4 holes in stationary point mount.....next time be sure the 4th, which the pivot post passes thru, isn't the interference that is preventing the 0.015 adjustment.
