PTO Shifter Making noise

PTO Shifter on my 8N is trying to come out of gear. Makes a grinding noise. If I hold it back all the way then it has no noise.
Got a bungie cord on it right now to keep it all the way back. That works. But is only a temporary fix.
What will I need to fix it? I see the PTO shifters on Ebay pretty cheap. Should I just replace it.
Do I need to pull the top plate to change it out?

Guess I don't know the Drill.
This is the first time I've had any PTO problems.
Maybe I've just been lucky?
Anyway, I went out there and checked. By in and out do you mean in gear and out of gear?
If you push it all the way back it springs forward a little. Checked a couple other of my tractors and they do that too.
It feels the same on all tractors. When I put the bungie on it I'm holding it all the way back.

Or the shaft moving into the casing and out from the casing (cover)?
No movement in that direction.

Yes the PTO shaft, if you are positive the shaft has NO movement the issue is with the PTO support are associated parts. I seriously doubt the shiftier its self is a issue.

6 bolts retain the shiftier to the tractor pull it off for a look see.

FD, I don't think Hobo is talking about the PTO shifter.
Rather, the PTO shaft where it comes out of the rear end.
Does it move in/out, forward/aft there?

My 8N use to do the same thing. I finally got aggravated enough to replace the pto shaft. It had too much "Play" in it. Problem solved. :)

Yea, Me and Hobo were talking about two different shafts.
That's because I hadn't even considered the problem to be the PTO shaft.
Thought for sure it would be in the shifter.
That's why I came here with the question.
Guess I'll change out the shaft.
Should have a spare laying around here.
Thanks everyone for the help.
