Cracked Crank

This is kind of interesting. Took my crankshaft in to have reground (2N) and, although journals still had plenty of meat left the machinist said he would have to weld up and grind center journal on sides as lateral clearance was excessive. He called later on and said magnet-flux of crank showed it was cracked in center. He said he could procure a used crank for $100 or so and grind it to specs for new bearings. After a week or so I stopped by to see how it was going. He said he had gone through 4 used cranks before finding a good one. They were either cracked or were to end of life and no metal left to regrind. There must be a lot of tractors running around on marginal crankshafts! I assume all these were from tractors parted out. I did not realize that crankshafts would develop a crack and of never heard of one just breaking under normal use. This machinist found rod ends out of round and I have complete confidence in his skills as he has been doing this a long-long time. This is all to fix a low oil pressure problem and is a re-tear down. Bill
 
Bill,There are probably a lot of them running around with stress crack crankshafts.I know that I have had to replace several that had cracks show up when magnafluxed before having them turned.
 
Can't you buy new cranks for N's? Dad put a new one in his 64 4000. The crank cost 500 and came with bearings.
 
A new crank was an option At $400-500 but a used reground is fine. You know the saying about everything runs on used parts. I do have another used worn engine but chose to leave it intact. If this rebuild is good (and it should be) this engine will be in service long after I am gone and then someone else can worry about it. Actually it will be used to do volunteer mowing at the humane society (about 3 acres) before their Cub Cadet gets worn out and its beating me up over rough ground.
