napa points

just installed napa points yesterday in the 2n as i gapped them at .015 i realized if the gap needed to be any wider it wouldn't work, the widest gap my points would make was barely .015, then today the tractor quit, i used my test light on the coil and normally i would expect my light to flash when turning over it just dimmed a slight bit, so sounds like my points slid in and closed the gap, anyone else experience this?

thanks dave

Have you checked the bushings?

Got the star washers under the screws?

OEM plate or a replacement pot-metal one?

The picture is of one of my frontmount distributors with the OEM plate, Echlin points and new bushings. Just for s & g's, I opened the points to .030.

Maybe you have bad bushings or got a bad set of points. Or maybe NAPA is importing parts from The Land of Almost Right.

going to inspect later when it cools off, if the bushings were bad it should wobble a bit shouldn't it? i do have the star washers, i'm sure it's the original plate, something is wrong for sure if you were able to open to .030, also my rotor from napa took some work to get it on, never had one that didn't slide on easy, maybe they are importing from the land of close is good enough, thanks for the response bruce

Hmmmm........

I just replied & the post didn't take.

Maybe I said something that wasn't PC.

So, I'll try again.

If the shaft has any sideways movement whatsoever, you need to replace the bushings. Sometimes you can detect bad bushings by checking the point gap on all 4 lobes of the cam.

I haven't seen the problem on NAPA/Echlin or Standard Blue streak points yet, but a very common problem on the cheap points that often come in a kit is that the tab on the rocker arm of the points that rubs on the lobes of center shaft is too short so points don't open as they should. I've had a couple sets I could barely get to open to .015 for that reason. I've also seen the problem on cheap points for other tractors. One major reason to only buy quality points.

no movement on the shaft and consistent gap on all 4 lopes, after reinspecting it looks like someone could have replaced the
plate, looks pretty new, 2n is strong under load now but point gap is maxed at barely .015

thanks all

All the pot metal new plates Ive seen have a plastic insulator and a pan head brass screw instead of the cocave fillister head screw. Does yours?
