agreed. When i see machines being sold that don't run but need a 5$ or 20$ part, It immediately makes me think the seller is dishonest or a scheister trying to pawn off a broke machine on someone.

I say a used equipment dealer selling a vintage JD tractor cheap cheap saying it needed a switch .....really? why not replace the switch and get 3x money...

"Never seen a 9n/2n with scalloped rear center disks?"

i know nothing about scalloped rears, but that looks like an 8N to me, going by the small front hubs.

"Location of the battery tells me
it's a 2n with 8n front hubs."

hmmm ok, the battery in an 8N would be farther forward, with the tool box behind it?

which begs the question, what happened to this one's tool box? i'd say any potential buyer should ask for 100 bucks off due to this crude piece of misdirection ;)

I agree John, 3 speed trans, battery up under the hood, oval
radius rods, 9N/2N 6 bolt rear hubs, etc. A typical mutt.
Probably works perfectly well in the right hands.

There was an old guy here that torched his centers into scallops
like that after he replaced the hat rims with 6 loop rims.
He said he did it for the same reason Ford did it.
So he could turn the rims or centers a bit and move the tires
from the front side of the centers to the rear side of the centers
to adjust width without having to remove the centers from the
tractor. His story not mine, I'm only repeating it.

Battery on the 8N is below the hood and the small rear hub/bolt pattern for comparison.

royse, ty for the graphic demonstration of how i ? an idiot. i have no idea how i didn't know there was a huge difference in the REARS

on the bright side, tho, i'm starting to think i'm one of only 3 people on earth (the other 2 being the guys who helped me) who can remove an N oil pan without removing the front axle. so i got that going for me.

and relax, this isn't gonna turn into an ammeter thing ;)

I hope by now you know I am not out to make anyone seem like
an idiot and I hope the picture helps everyone see the differences
John was talking about in his post.
None of us know it all. The collective trust has yet to fail me tho!

As to the ammeter thing, differences in opinion are good.
They start conversations with different views expressed.
Links are attached for learning and broadening of horizons.
My own included. We can all learn from open discussions, have
differences of opinion and not be mortal enemies afterwards.
Assuming we are all adults that is.
Isn't this called a "discussion forum"? :)

i do know that. besides, you'll never be as good as i am at making me look like an idiot ;)

I have one I'll sell you for $100 bucks! I only paid $5 for it at a consignment auction. Not that it would even fit on this tractor anyway.
