Front Axle bushing replacement

I am just finishing King pin, bushing, and axle replacement on my 1943 2n. I knew there was too much play
in the front axle pivot, it rattled around while driving. In my case I had to remove the bracket from the
front of the engine with the axle and King pin in it and drive the pin out with a socket and sledge hammer
from the rear. The bushing was worn through and the axle bore was damaged by wear. I thought I would use
JB weld to fill the gap between the bushing and worn bore, but then noticed small cracks in the top of the
axle about one inch to the right and left of the bore hole. I found a replacement axle online used, with a
lightly worn bushing, good fresh bore, and no cracks for $110 delivered. Took me a few hours to media
blast, primer and paint. Pressed in a new bushing and viola' good as new! I'd say if you have much bushing
play at all then pull it and replace the bushing to stop wear of the bore. Since the pin is so thick it
will wear far further than the bushing, but the bushing is thin and when worn through begins to eat the
axle.

Just my observation.
 
front axle pin/bushing wear is common on these old machines.

PS. jb weld belongs nowhere in this type of repair. it wouldn't have done anything real.. might as well have packet it with cornflakes.. it would have had no load bearing capability. Good that you went to another axle.

i'm thinking the corn flakes would be better. that way, if your front end says ENOUGH while you're out at the far end of the field, u have something to snack on for the walk back ;)
