2n oil pan removal question

trying to remove the oil pan off my 47 ford 2n everything's loose on
pan all nuts are out. seems to still be stuck up front?? can't see
anything holding it up ? I've heard axle arm removal ? any advice will
be greatly appreciated thanks!

are u absolutely sure you've pulled all the bolts? having just done this over the winter, i remember there being one or two up front that were... hidden? seems to me i never did see where one went, i just felt it.

all bolts are out . says I have to remove front axle radius rods , drag links and axle support move axle assembly forward ... all that for oil pan??

"says I have to remove front axle radius rods , drag links and axle support move axle assembly forward ... all that for oil pan??"

i've heard that said too. at the time, i didn't know any better. i didn't do any of that, and had no issues dropping or replacing the pan.

The oil pan is the frame on N tractors. The front of the machine has to be unbolted from the pan and moved forward to get to the two bolts hidden by the bolster.

lol, i am more confused by the minute.

"the heavy cast iron pan is part of the frame. You have to remove the front axle."

could someone please define "remove" for me? because i'll swear in court that i did no such thing to pull my oil pan. i did not roll anything out of the way. i did not disconnect the radius rods or drag links.

Brandon,
No disrespect here.
Welcome and glad we can help.
BTW, what is the overall problem or reason to take down the oil pan?
Oil pump pickup tube, sludge removal, etc?
Just wondering.
Greg

"were your 2 front bolts missing, did you get at them with stubby tools?"

no, and no. in fact, i specifically happen to remember using a 6 inch extension to reinstall one of them, blind and working by touch. i don't think i ever saw that particular bolt except when it was out and in my hand.

(quoted from post at 09:49:46 07/26/16) Your not the only one confused .

Too much info...........it would tend to confuse anyone!!!
I'll try to let ya see what needs to be done.

The reason the front axle needs to come off......it is attached to the front of the oilpan via the bolster.

SO....jack up the tractor at the very front of the transmission, and stack cribbing under the tranny.....leaving the engine/with oilpan, hanging out from the tranny.

These two pix, should clear yer mind a little!!!

As soon as you get a chance....put a floor jack and plate of wood under the oil pan, to keep the pan from falling to the floor and shattering the oilpan!!!!!.........(which would happen just as soon as you removed the two 'Hidden bolts)".....that you could not find, but will find, now that the axle and bolster is out of the way!!!!!!

Careful and easy does it!!!!!

"Was this on a N tractor or a NAA or later tractor?"

a 1947 2N - same model and year as the OP's :)

procedure went as follows:

cribbing under trans

jackstands under rear ends of radius rods

floor jack under oilpan

remove all the easy to find bolts from pan

lower floor jack

swear

raise floor jack

grope around front, find and remove 2 mystery bolts

lower floor jack again

smile :)

ps: gary, i'll see your floor jack and wood, and raise u. three sets of hands is wonderful - one set on each end of the pan and one working the jack. i worked the jack

to paraphrase the oldsmobile ad - this is not your grandson's stamped sheet metal oil pan.
