Leveler Box Refurbish (?)

I removed the leveler box that I had put on to replace mine that had a stripped fork and bent shaft and decided to take it apart to do a better job of truing up the screw.

Well low and behold, a broken up bearing with the spacer for the rollers in pieces.

So fortunately, I hadn't thrown away the original Jube Box and after some extreme heat and drifting I got it apart and found what I hoped to find . . . a useable bearing of the same size.

the QUESTION:

I can't figure out which way is up for the bearing.
The box with the blown bearing had a washer between the crown gear and bearing that someone must have put in as a shim.

The stains in one box shows that the bearing was one side up
and the stains in the other are too rusty to tell. I can't remember which side was up with all that grease when I took them apart, but I think one was installed incorrectly anyway
and I don't as a general rule just blindly put things back the way I found them.

Anyway . . . the photos:

Cap side against crown gear.
When installed this way the cap turns with the crown and easily clears the housing walls.

The metal on either side is equally thick.

Others will chime in but it looks to me that you do not want the cap to spin in the housing.
Crown side of bearing should go in housing and flat side would take the thrust of the gear.

Dune,

That's my best guess too. Photo #2.
There's lots of clearance for the cap to spin and it stays centered, but as with typical bearings, where the outer race is fixed, that makes sense.

Your point about the flat face being against the crown is perfect!

The wear marks in the housing, Photo #3
show that my original Jube bearing was installed correctly.

I think that the Ferguson box I put on with the broken bearing had the bearing in upside down and that may have been what caused it to break up.

Thanks very much!

I've got a historical scenario for this MF Leveler Box.

They probably knew that the bearing had gone and so they put a "washer" not a shim, between the bearing and the crown gear . . .so the crown gear would just ride that washer. No wonder it was so hard to crank!!

They couldn't have been trying to shim the crown gear up higher with a good working bearing because the crown doesn't drive the bearing. if there's a washer in between.

But the crown and pinion in this MF are in excellent shape and feel tight and smooth . . . just have to de-rust the interior.
any shimming would probably be of the pinion, right?

What with mission creep, I'll probably paint it red. :)
