I removed the leveler box that I had put on to replace mine that had a stripped fork and bent shaft and decided to take it apart to do a better job of truing up the screw.
Well low and behold, a broken up bearing with the spacer for the rollers in pieces.
So fortunately, I hadn't thrown away the original Jube Box and after some extreme heat and drifting I got it apart and found what I hoped to find . . . a useable bearing of the same size.
the QUESTION:
I can't figure out which way is up for the bearing.
The box with the blown bearing had a washer between the crown gear and bearing that someone must have put in as a shim.
The stains in one box shows that the bearing was one side up
and the stains in the other are too rusty to tell. I can't remember which side was up with all that grease when I took them apart, but I think one was installed incorrectly anyway
and I don't as a general rule just blindly put things back the way I found them.
Anyway . . . the photos:
Cap side against crown gear.
When installed this way the cap turns with the crown and easily clears the housing walls.
Other side against crown gear
The metal on either side is equally thick.
Stains showing Bearing cap side down in housing.
The other box that had bad bearing:
Bearing: Exploded view
