Pertronix Install 6 volt

I have a '49 8N I use about 3 times a year. It has always been tough to start the first time but runs great once it finally starts. I installed the
Pertronix for the 6volt according to the instructions. It started instantly and idles great. When increasing the RPMs the engine misses and has
no power. It seems like the timing is too retarded. Is it possible to adjust the timing on a front mount distributor?
Any suggestions to get it running smooth would be welcome.

Thanks,
David

ounds like symptoms of weak spark which could be result of too much resistance in coil circuit. What resistor are you using? Still positive ground? No resistor in power feed to module, right?

yes, 6 volt positive, I am using the stock resistor which i replaced about 3 years ago. The pertronix ignition wire is connected to the upper right
post on the resistor which goes to the igition switch. the coil positive is grounded.

ounds correct. Unlikely a timing problem. Be sure plug wires in proper order 1243

Yes you adjust it the same way you do a points set up other than make the adjustment while the dist is mounted to the engine. Its a guess unless you have indicated TDC in and have a reference mark for TDC and use a timing light.

Not to muddy up the water the ignition wire should go directly to the igniter not thru the resistor. Using a OEM square can coil The wire from the top of the coil to ground I run that wire form top of coil thru the resistor to ground. Its my belief the OEM style coil still needs the resistor.

Use a spark checker to confirm spark if it will jump the gap of a spark checker spark is notcher problem. If you don't have a spark checker and everyone that works on there tractor should a pix of one is in the link.

i checked the firing order. all good. its been a month since i started it and it fired up before i got the started button depressed all the way. it still misses above idle rpms.
i tried to move the breaker plate bolt up or down in the small slot on the distributor but it won't move. i will take the radiator cover off in a couple of days to get to the front of the distributor and see if i can slift the plate a couple of degrees left or right.

Good luck with that.

The large clip that holds the plate in will most likely prevent you from moving the plate while the distributor is on the tractor.

Take the distributor off the tractor & advance the timing 2 notches. (you are aware that it's not necessary to remove the radiator to work on the distributor, right?)

But.........

I agree w/ JMOR; timing isn't your problem. Advancing it a couple of notches will probably help performance, but it's not going to cure a misfire.

When you get the distributor off the tractor, check the cap & rotor carefully.

And remove the clip & plate & check the advance weights.

And most importantly, check the bushings.

i was able to move the breaker plate set screw that was set dead center up one division ( counter-clockwise, so more retarded). The miss at
mid-range RPMs is gone. i'm not sure if it running perfectly but the timing was certainly off and it runs much better.

don't like raining on one's parade, but in moving that breaker plate (timing adjust), you very likely fixed an intermittent coil pigtail to concave screw connection. Thus, no more miss. A couple degrees of timing advance didn't do it. But glad you and tractor are happy!:)
