8N Starter issues

Let me jump right into the symptoms.

Tried to start it a couple weeks ago and all I got was a "click" sound.
I went a got a hammer and tapped the side of the starter and pushed the starter and it cranked right off.

So I assumed the brushes were worn. Took the starter apart and yes the brushes were well worn. The brass brush contact on the shaft was worn as well and very dirty. Cleaned that up and put new brushes in. Reinstalled and it turned right over. So, fixed right? ....No.

Tonight (5 days later) I went out and tried to start it and... "click", "click".... same thing again.

Any other ideas on what it might be?
 
Here are some random thoughts of things to check.
Is your battery good and fully charged?
Connections clean and tight at the battery AND
at the other end of the cables including ground?
Did you clean the starter mounting surfaces when you
put it back in after the repair? They're part of the ground.
Sounds like maybe moving it around made a good
enough connection to start it a few times.
 
MOmilkman ,Were the brush springs in good condition or replaced,did they have good tension?Springs can be over heated and loose their tension and the brushes will not make a good connection to the armature.Remove the brush cover on the starter for a look see.
 

I would check the starter relay - it is on top and easy to get at. The clicking sound is the coil pulling the contacts together however, if the contacts are burnt the battery to starter connection is not made.

Yes, the springs were replaced along with the brushes so I wasn't too concerned about that.

It was a loose connection from the positive on the battery to the silaniod. (however you spell that) Cleaned everything, re tightened and started right up. You nailed it Royse. Thank you all.
