Not sure of exact year but 48 or 49 based on Front Mount Distributor.

I bought this tractor with no battery or terminals. Has an alternator already upgraded on it. I bought a new 12v battery and terminals, hooked it up but I'm not sure if it's even a negative ground system.

So It turns over no start, changed plugs and wires. Bought a pertronix electric distributor. Put it all on, fires up, AWESOME! 10 minutes later dies, have to let it sit for an hr before restart to run for 2 minutes. Had to run it at wide open throttle for it to move with no power so rebuilt carb.

Same problems. Please help me!
 
If it starts and runs, polarity is correct. had polarity been wrong, the EI would have died in a second or 2.

at stall, check spark.

my guess is you have spark, but don't have fuel. thus the low power and and long time to restart.

may be getting almost no fuel flow to carb. she starts, and runs off fuel in carb bowl, then dies.. then slowly refills.
 
I weak coil will give you the same action (lack of power & running for short periods) Get a spark tester and see how much of a gap that spark will jump. If little or nothing.. bad coil
 
I have to do a better check but it seems I have plenty of fuel as if I crank it over for 15-20 seconds after it dies, gas pours out the bottom drain
 
Busy day didn't get tools out just fired it up. Hoping it was different today. Tomorrow I'll be digging in to it
 
Spark tests need to be done right at the moment of stall to be meaningfull. anything else and you are just spinning wheels..
