OT (computer mystery's)

ever since we went with WIN10 our AOL has been doing backflips. this morning I noticed that "you've got mail is back". (voice) that disappeared with W10. not only that but the toolbar at the top of our email screen is back to W7. (or 8 or 8.1) also if I want to keep a email as new it no longer offers "mark as unread" but "keep as new". the old words.

I think this krap happens when automatic updates arte done but not sure.

I will never understand this puter stuff and to think my mom wanted me to go to a computer school back in 69 to keep me out of the draft. mebbe I should have enrolled instead of enlisting.

i wish i could help u, steve - this, not farming, is my stock in trade. but AOL is like another world to me. i haven't used AOL in any context for 20+ years.

i suspect these are questions you'll need to direct to AOL themselves.

but i'm curious about the wording of your post. u say "we went with Win 10" but u also mention automatic updates. from this, i infer that win 10 was your own choice, and the automatic updates u refer to are things other than the operating system itself - or have i misunderstood?

did the AOL software work properly (or, as u expected it to) when u first installed win 10, and then start misbehaving later? if so, then yes, an automatic update of the AOL software, or windows itself, could be responsible.

we went from W7 to W8 then 8.1 then W10. all voluntary as we fell prey to Microsoft's fear campaign.

each upgrade(?) went smoothly. every so often something changes which we did not knowingly initiate which is why I blame auto updates.

we have had AOL since 96 when we got our first computer. for what we do it has served us well and now it pays for my AARP membership. I was enrolled automatically. I really see no reason to have AARP but if it is free then it is for me. :)

i love my new (last 5 years or so) insurance agent. she pointed out that joining AARP would reduce my annual insurance by more than the cost of the dues.

i joined

ok, so u knowingly upgraded each time. windows update is a mixed blessing. i would never tell anyone to disable it - but that doesn't mean it won't ever **** me off.

mine is set to notify me about updates, and then require my go ahead. but there will always be updates that look fine and good and necessary, and yet still turn around and bite u in a sensitive area.

did it work properly with win 10 to begin with? if so, and u remember exactly when the problem started, u could try doing a system restore from just before then. if not, then it's a problem with AOL itself running on win10, and i'd contact AOL about that. billybob gates won't want to hear about it.

When 10 installs, it makes edge the default browser. Among other things, edge does not support some active x and other things.

It does not delete IE.

Any chance you are seeing different behavior because you may be using different browsers, edge for some, IE for others?

AARP sends me mail to try and get me to sign up for their insurance. I talked to a Hartford once and when I told him what we were paying with statefarm he said no way could Hartford (aarp) match SF's price. I have had other ins co's tell me the same thing.

sorry for the confusion, steve - i don't have AARP insurance. an AARP membership entitles me to a discount on my non-AARP policy. i think i'm with auto owners now.

ok, i was assuming u were using an AOL proprietary browser. are u trying to access an AOL web mail interface using edge?

Far as I know, AARP is waaay in favor of gun control.... no chance I will ever support AARP... no matter how much crap they clutter my mailbox with..

But I DO like Ford tractors.... yes I do...

Where did you find that option in Win10 HFJ?
I haven't been able to find it and I've been on Win10 since the
first developers' preview came out, what, late 2014 or so?
I figured they got rid of it.

Other than the enterprise version at work that is. There I can
control the updates via Microsoft System Center and WSUS.
Which makes me pretty sure it is in there somewhere!

i hate to say this, but one of these days, i fear i'll end up on linux. i've been putting it off for decades, but billybob's crew are not winning any points with me lately.

[b:2d9eb599ba]Dang it! I was hoping you had found it. :)[/b:2d9eb599ba]

 BTDT :)
