8N rear wheel hub

Rear hub loose on axle, even at 450 ft-lb torque. Removed wheel and hub. Hub had "shims" from previous owner.

New hub outer edge is 1/8" from start of splines of axle when just lightly hammer installed. Will the new hub tighten up or do I need a new axle?

What is this dimension of a new axle and a new hub?

Roger,A new axle is in order,as the axle is also worn or re shim the hub again so it will draw up tight, like it was done before.

It wasn't tight before with the shims, but they were "down" in the splines of the axle. Should the shims be up on top of the axle splines, if used?

Sometimes a new hub will tighten up enough, other times both the hub and axle need to be replaced. Sounds like it is worn bad, so I suspect both are needed.

Shims are shims, remember, if in the valley of the axle, you are on the spline of the hub, or if on the spline of the axle, the valley of the hub, so its a point of view issue.

Do you want to fix it again later? Yes? Shim it.

No? New axles

Hub is out toward the nut 1/8" more than the splines. In my mind it should tighten down but I think now the inner part of hub is contacting the bearing or shoulder and may not tighten down.

NOT one of Henry's better ideas and that lubrication can get to the splines is doubly dumb.

" In my mind it should tighten down but I think now the inner part of hub is contacting the bearing or shoulder and may not tighten down. " Given that you have hub extending outward beyond axle splines, I do not think that is very likely. Furthermore, if that were the case, it should lock up tight such that you couldn't turn the hub. Paint back of hub, install, turn if possible, remove and look for disturbed paint.
