Howdy. Don't know if you got an answer, but I finally remembered to look at some stuff I have used for years. Diatomaceous Earth (silicone dioxide). Kills crawling insects and is probably the only thing that will cut (and kill) slugs. Should be available at garden center or hardware. HTH

Silicon dioxide dies not equal diatomatious earth. De is 89-90% silica.

Is, its a major constituent, but its not equal.

Water is a major constituent of koolade, but they aren't the same thing. :)

Just for S&G, I googled the stuff. Interesting bit on the National Pesticide Information Center. Doesn t seem to agree with you. Just sayin .

actually, souNdguy is correct. silicon dioxide, aka silica, is one of the commonest compounds on the surface of the earth. in its most common form, it's called sand. now, if simply using silica was the answer, people would be idiots to buy diatomaceous earth, due to the difference in price, right?

diatomaceous earth is a substance mainly consisting of (as souNdguy pointed out, about 90%) silica - but it's silica in a very specific form.

i went to the NPIC pages on DE. i didn't see anything to make me think what souNdguy said was wrong.

Then nps is wrong!

Google de

Google silicon dioxide.

Note the de contains other ingredients.

Or are you trying to say that 2 containers containing different materials are exactly equal.

De is 80-90% silica. That means there is 10-20% other ingredients.

Silicon dioxide is 100% silica.

Who ya gonna believe? Physics & mathematics, or nps?

I'd guess someone at nps flunked math and logic.

Just read about de from the place you mentioned. They agree exactly.

I never said silica wasn't the active ingredient. But there are others, clay dust and alumina.

Here is a breakdown of de:

The typical chemical composition of oven-dried diatomaceous earth is 80 to 90% silica, with 2 to 4% alumina (attributed mostly to clay minerals) and 0.5 to 2% iron oxide.[1]

I'm not sure what you read to conclude otherwise.
