8N wont turn over

I have a 52 8N that wont turn over. It has been converted to 8V with a altenator. I put a new battery and solenoid switch but it still wont do anything. I have a hard time understanding this positive ground stuff. I'm going to try bypassing the start button. What else should I look at?

I forgot to add. I have 8 volts to the battery side of the solenoid and to the small wire terminal all the time.

You have a number of potential problems.

Did you install an alternator instead of a generator? If it really is an alternator hooked up positive ground, you no longer have an alternator You have a door stop.

Next, how do you expect to charge an 8 volt battery with an alternator or a generator putting out 14.5 volts?

Actually it has had the alternator for several years without issue. I didn't do it so I don't know how it works. I think the alternator was reworked somehow.

Well, yes, that's possible.......sort of like winning the Lottery is possible.

I've got a 6 volt positive ground alternator on a 29 Ford, but it's new. What is surprising to me that anyone would go through the time & expense to wire an alternator positive ground AND to only put out 9.5 volts.

So before we go any further, are you 100% sure it's an alternator AND it's wired positive ground?

it's easy to determine whether u still have a positive ground system. look at your 2 battery cables. one will go the solenoid - this is not your ground. the other will go to the body/tractor itself. on my 2N, this is high on the front (side facing forward) of the dash, up near the top. this one is your ground - u just need to see whether it's labeled with a plus or a minus on the battery.

The alternator has one wire. It goes to the amp gauge then from the other terminal on the gauge to the negative side of the battery. I'm not sure if this helps.

ok something isnt making sense, how many cells does the battery have? 3, 4 or 6? if the battery has 6 and its showing 8 volts, its discharged, id pop that alternator off and take it to the parts store and see what that thing is really putting out if its wired for positive ground, which im taking a chance and saying there is a 99.9 chance it isnt you need to know, lets identify the electrical system, and go from there it sounds like mixed parts on the tractor

ello, 8NDave. I'll be much more direct than the other responders(?). Transmission in neutral, then connect jumper wire from solenoid small terminal to tractor chassis & see if that makes starter spin.

Found the issue. The positive battery terminal needed cleaning even though I did that before I put the new battery in. I just didn't do it good enough.
