New 8N Owner with a Starter Problem

I just got an 8N (1941) that my neighbor gave me. Last running last year. Battery was dead, bought new one. Tried to start it and the push down starter actuator stuck down and the wiring started smoking. I checked my manuals and see that there is some linkage to the solenoid. My guess is that it is probably corroded and stuck in the closed position.

Any suggestions? :?:

oing to need a little clarification here. If it is 1941, then it is not an 8N AND it will not have had a solenoid. Whatcha got?

Like JMOR said, not an 8N if it is a 1941 model it would be a 9N, maybe, depending on other factors too. Does it have a 4-speed tranny or a 3-speed? 9Ns had no starter solenoid. The starter and starter button are two different animals. Original electrical setup was 6-volt/positive ground. You say you bought a new battery. What is it, 6 or 12 volt? Holding the starter button down will not cause wiring to smoke. Sounds like you may have a wiring issue. Did it run when you got it? We need more info to help you out here..

welcome to YT, cowboy.

as JMOR pointed out, a 9N should not have a solenoid. if it does, someone added it after the fact. are u sure yours has a solenoid?

pictures may or may not help here.

OK, a 9N has a mechanical linkage to the starter switch. Suggest you remove the starter switch which is located on the front side of the steering column. You will have no trouble locating it because it has two big cables attached to it. Remove and do some continuity tests on it. Post back. Starter button has a spring which returns it. Spring may be broken.

Your probably right as the switch does not return to the up position. I'm thinking I might just bypass the floor switch and put a push button switch on the dash.

the "floor switch" includes a neutral-start safety setup. by bypassing it, u will remove that safety feature. be prepared for people to tell u to not do it.

as for the switch on the dash - because there is no solenoid, whatever switch u use will need to be able to handle the amperage required to spin the starter. otherwise, you'd have to add a solenoid to the tractor to use a less heavy duty switch. IMO, it would be far easier to simply replace the normal start switch on your tractor, assuming that's the problem for sure.

PS, for clarification:

when i say start switch, i am referring to the thing with the wires on it in front of the steering/dash. there is also the push button which sits in front of the shifter - but that's not what i refer to when i say "start switch".

Sometimes these things can be like a bad
dream. The rest of the time they're merely
a nightmare.
They sure are fun to drive though. And not
at all hard to fix.
