replacing the coil on 52 8N side mount

In cleaning my electrical connections I over tightened the nut on the top of the coil and loosened the post (starter wire). I will need to replace the coil now. Any tips on 1) coil brand? - it's 6volt 2) removing the coil from the bracket? - rusted and painted screw on bracket - does bracket need to be loosened from block to remove the coil? 3) when tightening connections on new coil should I use washers of any kind such as star washer to promote good connection? Are brass washers use to prevent this type of over tightening? Thanks for any tips...one problem leads to another

nothing wrong with washers, but they won't prevent overtightening - u just have to be gentle. my method for stuff like this is to use a 1/4" drive extension and socket (NO ratchet handle) and tighten it by hand.

In theory, you should be able to loosen the screw & lift the coil out. In reality, even when I was able to loosen the screw, the coil proved too long to get out of the bracket. Maybe I've got a non-OEM coil & it's too long.

So, just remove the bracket & cut the screw. Get a new one from the local hardware store.

Yes, use washers.

This site has coils, as does nnalert's & NAPA (p/n IC7SB). I'd just get the cheapest one.

Thanks for the help. You replied I should use washers but didn't say if you preferred brass or star washers when making these electrical connections. Any preference?

I use star washers. I dont think brass would be much better.c
