8n ford tractor paint

OK, I hear all kinds of pro's and con's about painting my tractor. I'm in the process of getting my tractor ready for painting soon. The tractor body will be blasted soon and the sheet metal is already finished. What is the best primer to use (gray I assume) on the sheet metal and on the chassis. It's a 1950 model 8N. I want some kind of enamel that won't chalk or fade yet stands up to dirt grease etc. I see Tesco mentioned a lot but does PPG, Sherwin Williams, Valspar or someone like that produce a good quality paint.

Thanks

I like epoxy primer and Omni paint. They both go on nice and the paint looks excellent. Make sure you use hardener. Ask you paint guy about breathing protection.

I used red oxide primer on the cast parts. Keep in mind that prep is 90% of a good paint job. Clean, grease-free (including fingerprints!), etc.

Rustoleum Sunrise Red is a reasonably close match to the original red, and I used Valspar hardener with mine. I shed my tractor and it still looks good eight years later.

The light grey is harder to match, and I ended up custom-tinting the TSC Ford Grey as it was too light out of the can. Apparently there used to be a Rustoleum Olive (Grey?) that was reasonably close.

That's what I went with, and am (still) happy with it. There are other options out there, of course.

red oxide primer verses epoxy primer.

Epoxy is not worth a damm unless the surface is perfect..
I am slowly going back to RED OXIDE...

Thunderman,

I've been using Valspar self-etching primer if bare steel . . . sticks like s*#t to a blanket. :D

I used Valspar Polyurethane Ford Grey with hardener on my wheels. Durable and staying glossy.

For my last round of painting I used Pro Form, laquer-thinned spray primer, and tried out a pint of Valspar New Holland Red
on my MF Brush Hog to see what that "red" looked like and I really like it.

I had been wondering what red was used on my Jubilee before me and I think I might have just found it. New Holland Red.
I brush painted the Black Valspar Rust Paint. Smells real industrial that black and is lasting well on my dirt bucket.

Wish I could have edited in:

That cutter deck, had big dime sized creaters all over after I chip- hammered all the thick rust flakes off.

I followed by 1/2' grinder with a wire cub.

my point? Oh yeah

This black paint on top will probably be the most convincing test of a so called Rust Paint that I've ever done. But on my spruced up dirt scoop the black valspar really stood up to steady rain and/or extremely high humidity all last winter so I'm already 3/4 convinced that it is the best rust anti rust black I've ever used. I've got to start parking attachments under cedars. :D

I used lots of Tremclad black (Rust Paint) in earlier days, and apparently it is the Canadian Division of Rust Oleum.

Red oxide primer So much easier to see scratches and defects in it and I aint never seen paint pealing off red Oxide just seem to me the gray is so much harder to work with.
