ford 9n leak question

I recently acquired a 47 9n . Everything runs great . There are small drips forming on right side of oil pan bolts. Is my gasket bad or can I just tighten up bolts a bit ?

UD and i might be twins, separated at birth.

i wish the basshat my 2N came from had understood that - because the red belly scheme does NOT add horsepower :(

How can you tell it's a 2n?? lady I got it from said 9n I was wondering bc serial # on axle starts with 2n... yes blue adds about 4.7 hp lol thanks for replies. I'm sure I'll be putting up a bunch questions on here , might sound dumb but bare with me haha. thanks

both 9N and 2N serial numbers start with 9N.

john smith's site has a great ford tractor ID page. have a look :)

i said 2N for a couple of reasons - 47 = 2N, u have the oval radius rods - all 9Ns had the I-beam style. the big center hub on the front wheel rules out an 8N.

They are small bolts, go easy on the re-torque.
It's worth a try before you tear it apart.
It's not as easy as dropping the oil pan from a car.

Link to John's awesome history and ID section.

My father-in-law bought what he thought was a 9N and called it that for years. Some things just didn't add up so I did some research. Here is what I found about the 2N's:

1947- Numbers 9N258540 to 9N306221
1946 - 9N198767 to 9N258539
1945 - 9N170018 to 9N198766
1944 - 9N126575 to 9N170017
1943 - 9N105412 to 9N126574
1942 - 9N99047 to 9N105411

Hope this helps out some.

(quoted from post at 12:28:28 07/11/16) My father-in-law bought what he thought was a 9N and called it that for years.

it's a very common point of confusion - i've always assumed it was because both serial numbers are prefixed with 9N.

it's almost like ford was admitting the new 2N model designation was nothing more than a scam to get them around government wartime price freeze regulations.

Ford was always kind of odd when it came to
tractor models.
In addition to the 9/2N confusion, they made
two completely different 2000s - a 4
cylinder model and 3 cylinder model.
Likewise with two different 4000s. And they
sold two different 2110s. One based on the
3000 platform, the other built by Shibura in
Japan and 100% completely different.
Oh, and the 4100s. Go to the New Holland
website and the all purpose 3 cylinder 4000
is referred to as a 4100 (a 5000 is referred
to as a 5100 though they never sold one).
But they also sold a 4100 which was based on
the 4600 SU platform.
So you can't really fault someone for
mistaking a 2N for a 9N, especially when
Ford was kinda confused about it themselves.

agreed. the only people i fault for that are ford :)
