Idle Speed TOO HIGH!

When I throttle back, even with the little set screw on the throttle bar not even touching, the
motor is 3/4 speed. I can't get it to slow down . I screw in the screw to the front of carb and
it will slow engine down but then I can't get engine to respond to throttle lever. That is..I
can't get the motor to speed up. The choke has to run with about 1/2 in out.???Either I am almost
wide open or I have no response to throttle lever. Please help ..anyone. Thanx
PS Did I say it has no lever throttle response to engine speeding up or slowing down when I adj
that front screw to get the engine speed up?

if u have to run at half choke, it's likely starved for gas. three screens to check - one on top of sediment bowl assembly in gas tank, one screen in sediment bowl itself, and one in the elbow on the carb were the fuel line comes in. dirt in carb can cause the same problem.

open drain in bottom of carb, with fuel turned on at sediment bowl, u should get enough flow theu the carb to fill a pint jar in 2 or 3 minutes.

I seem to get plenty of fuel flowing . If I push choke in all way it won't start. Pulling it out 1
inch or so and wrapping wire around the base to keep it from pulling in, it runs fine but way too
fast and I have essentially no throttle control???I will say you are spot on about being starved
for fuel but when it is running it runs almost wide open? When I throttle back it has no effect
whatsoever? thanx

I think when you pull the choke out a bit, as it is connected to the throttle butterfly it automatically gives the engine some throttle at the same time as the choke for starting. I suggest you have an air leak somewhere between the carburettor and the inlet manifold.

If you haven't done so,I'd rebuild your carb. You may find that your carb is loose or the mounting gasket is shot. The idle circuit has very small passages,so may be clogged, thus the choke being used.

Trying2mow,You say, even with the little set screw on the throttle bar not even touching, the
motor is 3/4 speed. I can't get it to slow down .

Remove the linkage from the governor to the carb and see if you can move the throttle shaft by hand to idle position. If you can't remove the carburetor and check the butterfly for missing screws through the throttle shaft. The butterfly could have slipped down through the throttle shaft and it is binding and not closing.

"When I throttle back, even with the little set screw on the throttle bar not even touching, the

Does it slow down if you stick you finger on the head of the
idle set screw and push it against the pin?

"No...depressing against pin has no effect?"

If the shaft won't move so the idle adjust set screw can touch
the pin, then I would think something is binding.
Either in your carb or the linkage so it can't be moved.
Disconnect the linkage as Den suggested and try it.

Be careful with that if you start the engine because it will want
to run at full throttle as soon as it starts up if you are not right
there to control it.

If it will move and touch the pin without a change that's a
horse of a different color.

Has this tractor ever ran right for you or is it a new project?
If it did run right, have there been any recent changes to it?

I think it is a horse of a different color!!It used to run ok . I did notice a little drip of
oil coming out of the governor but that little crack has been there a long time. Maybe a little
more oil drip of late. The casing looks like a tiny pooched on crack but I know that sounds
crazy. It does look like a little poofed up crack. Could this be any effect???

(quoted from post at 20:58:48 07/13/16) did u get my reply?
Sorry for the delay T2M, been at the hospital with Joanie.
If you disconnect the linkage and run it by hand, that will
eliminate the governor as the problem. If it won't work by
hand, it won't work via the governor.

(quoted from post at 16:03:59 07/16/16) Hope Joanie is better by now. Thank goodness she has you in her corner. Talk with u later.
She is home and doing well, thank you.
Did you figure out the idle speed issue?
Will it idle down when ran by hand?

I am in far West Texas..near the border..and its between 105-107. I can barely hold a screw
driver after 10:30 AM. I am having to await my repairs until this oppressive heat lets up. I
can't even sit on the seat without a blanket. Just take care of Joanie and I will get back to
you. Thanx a bunch

I have relations out near Ballinger, not quite your area probably
but I certainly understand the heat issues. We'll be here. :)
