2N/9N overdrive?

Found little 2N or 9N for sale. It has a lever on the left side above the clutch and left brake. It was not attached to the dash. It would move it forward or back 2 positions.

The tractor did not run and the guy said he thought it was an overdrive for it. Just wondering what it could be and if it adds value. It was missing the knob. I didnt take any pictures of it.

Also, what's the best way to check to see if the motor is stuck? There was no battery and dont have any 6 volt ones to try. I may pass if it is but dont want to tear anything up.

It has an overdrive tranny in front of the normal one, like mine does. You may break the motor loose easily by removing the plugs
and putting an ounce or two of automatic transmission fluid in each cylinder. Wait overnight and with a large socket or
wrench,rotate the crankshaft clockwise.

Thanks. Does that make it worth more or is that pretty common?

Cgarret What you are describing is probably a Sherman direct/over transmission,if it is in good shape it would add about 200.00 to the worth of the tractor.Try turning the fan blade while holding down pressure on the fan belt to see if you can roll the engine over.A 12 volt battery will work to crank it over if it is free, and even start and run it for a short time if needed.
Sherman Step Up

See the link from Den N Ms.

I've got one on my 2n. VERY useful. Like sated already, adds about $200 value.

Just try using a 12v battery to turn it over. One jumper cable directly to the starter stud, the other on a clean spot on the chassy some where for a ground. MAKE SURE
THE TRACTOR IS OUT OF GEAR!!!

amen, Tracto-man. i've been careless enough to pull start a quad in gear. after the spider trax on the rear climbed up my leg, i'm in no hurry to find out how that compares to the 12.4 x 28 doing it.

Thanks everyone. How does that overdrive work? I could go two positions forward, so does that multiply the the gears? So it would be 9 forward and 3 back? I thought shermans were on the right side up closer to the front or ran off a cable. I am still learning.

The tin and grill are in real good shape. The tires are too. He had it off the ground on blocks. I didnt see many cracks and they were aired up. It has been sitting in the back of a barn for years. It does need paint.

I expect it is locked up but i plan to check when I get the chance. We haven't talked money but my guess he will want $900-$1000. Would it be worth that if it's stuck?

If it's overdrive with a handle it has 3 position- furthest forward is normal range, middle is neutral, all the back is overdrive.

A grand is too much for a stuck motor N

Well that's my guess what he would want. I know there is a lot of things to consider but what would be a fair price? I could not find a dent or bad rust anywhere on it. The only thing missing is that knob.

Owner sez it's probably an overdrive and since probably somewhere around 90% were step ups he's probably right, BUT since the step down uses the same
lever so it's impossible to tell by just looking at the lever. a step up may add $200 where a more useful step down might add $500/$600 to your value.
Probably the easiest way to tell in a locked up engine in a 2n is to pull the starter and with a flashlight see what color the sherman case is, red, step
down, Grey, step up.
The step down or step up is engaged when the lever is pulled back towards the operator. This will add another 3 forward speeds, another reverse speed and
another pto speed.
