OT - /6 in Hesston runs fine 15 minutes, loses power

My Hesston 6400 has a Dodge industrial /6 in it, and the last time I cut, it started losing power and surging. Might be important, might not, but I had just added gas (ran out), and it had been running okay up to that point.

I parked it and finished cutting with my sickle bar.

It's been three weeks, so I just tried it again (after repairing the clamp that holds the throttle cable in place - it was slipping and keeping me from getting full throttle - a problem that pre-existed this one).

It started and ran fine (with full throttle range restored), so I started cutting. After one trip around the field, it started losing power again and surging. It didn't cut out - was able to slowly work my way back up to the shed.

I'm planning to go get a new fuel filter in the morning (it's not been changed in maybe four or five years), but thought I'd toss this out in case any old-timers might recognize the /6 symptoms (yep, it has the infamous ballast resistor).

Will check back later and again in the morning before I head out to the parts store.

I don't believe its the ballast resistor Ed. When they burned
up in my old Dodge trucks they were just dead.
Carried a spare in the glove box of every one.

Sounds more to me like when you ran low on gas it sucked up
dirt/rust/crud from the bottom of the tank and it is now lean.
The surging caused by the governor working correctly.
Idled back to the shed because it didn't require as much flow.

No guarantees obviously but a filter change and/or carb cleaning
may get you going again. If so, probably not all you need long
term as a gas tank cleaning would be in order.

Hard to kill that old slant six unless you run it without oil.
For a week.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, too. Come to think of it, when I ran it earlier tonight, it did fine until I was cutting *uphill*.

I'll get a new filter, and might go ahead and drain the tank and see what comes out.

I sense a story here. Come on, Royse -- tell it!

Fixed. Turns out the problem was the throttle cable clamp all along. I had been checking to see that it was tight with the throttle closed (engine off), which was holding it in the correct spot due to tension. When I cranked up (full throttle), it held for about 15 minutes before slipping again, despite my having bent the clamp a bit to hold it tighter.

So after draining the fuel strainer and putting on a new inline fuel filter (good flow of gas), I started it up and it almost immediately slipped (before even starting to cut).

I slipped a 1" length of rubber hose slit lengthwise over the throttle cable and locked it back down again. Hay's down now!

I learned at the ripe old age of 11 or 12 to carry a spare BR till I got a 66 Plymouth and encountered a double unit from a slightly newer Chrysler and I only needed 1 side at a time. I 'always' kept a paper clip in glovebox as they made emergency fuses too. Had to keep that cigarette lighter working lol

Well it ain't my story Jim but a buddy of mine did an oil change.
The oil filter was apparently faulty and leaked out all the oil.
I say apparently faulty because he said so and I wasn't there
to check gaskets.

He drove it back and forth to work for a week.
"All must be good, I just changed the oil."

When he finally figured it out the engine still ran but rattled
very badly. I don't think it lasted him a year after that.

I don't remember if he had a non-functioning gauge or a check
engine light that was always on or what, but it didn't end well.
