oil filter canister mount

i keep forgetting to ask about this.

after i rebuilt my 2N engone, during reassembly, i noticed there was no way for the filter canister to sit properly against the head/block, as there is a boss (hope that's the right term) sticking out of the block which interferes with the seating of the front end of the bracket. easy solution, i just slipped a fat washer in the gap - but i don't remember even noticing anything odd about the fit when i took it apart to begin with.

my serial number tells me that the engine itself is original. did this canister come off a different N model, maybe? there's no way that bracket could have ever sat flat against the side of the block/head here.

Not sure if I know what you are referring to
what are you referring to with boss
my 8N the mount sit on the head and has 2 bolts to mount it .

sorry for the bad description.

on the left side of my block, there are 4 areas at the top of the block which stick out past the edge of the head. the largest is the area where the serial numbers are stamped. there are also 3 others which are smaller. 2 are between the serial number area and the back of the block.

the remaining one is at the front of where the bracket attaches, and prevents the bracket from sitting flush, since the edge of the block and the edge of the head don't line up there.

i understand it's not a big deal, it's not like the canister is going to fall off. i just don't remember noticing anything odd about it when i took it off, just when i went to bolt it back on. and i can't imagine the thing coming from the factory like this.

without taking things apart, this picture illustrates the issue better.

the protruding area at the top of the block in this picture, to the left of the front bolt hole for the bracket and below the rear of the flat spot of the head that gets drilled for a temp sensor, is farther forward than it is on my block, where it's behind the leading end of the mounting bracket. the rear end of the mounting bracket sits in front of the raised area for the serial number, so no issue there.

since it's an 8N block in that picture, and it looks like my bracket would bolt up just fine to it, i'm thinking there must be a slight difference in the mounting brackets between the 2 and the 8.

i don't know if the head is original, i assume it is. it doesn't have that flat spot.

You may have a head that came off a industrial, truck are jeep engine. The boss for the temp sender is in a different spot on those heads. The oil filter mounting boss on the head is in a different location on front/side mount engines. The generator is on the oil filter side of a side mount the filter had to be moved farther back.

there is no flat spot on this head like the temp sender boss on an 8N head in any location.

bottom line, my best guess is that my canister is off an 8N, as the spacing of the raised areas on that 8N block would allow it to sit flat against the head and block. there is no way this mounting bracket can fit between the raised areas on the side of my 2N block, regardless of any difference in the head. there simply is not enough room between those raised areas for this bracket to fit.

if a different head had the bolt holes for the bracket farther back, all that would to is change which end of the bracket didn't sit properly - it would just be wrong in the back instead. even wronger, as the serial number area sticks out farther than the area which is in the way in front.

the only way i can see this bracket sitting flat on this engine is if there were another head which had the bolt holes [i:5d58ae4baf]higher[/i:5d58ae4baf] - thereby raising the bracket above the engine itself.

You hit the nail. There are several differences in that part of the block and cylinder head that can prevent the oil canister bracket from 9N 2N from swapping with the nearly identical late 8N part. I was trying to come up with a universal accessory bracket that would slip between the oil pump bracket and the cylinder head. Short story is that no way would a single bracket always fit flush on all engines, even if I had the brackets drilled with both sets of mounting holes. The solution is the same one you came up with. I include a couple of washers in case they need to go between the cylinder head and bracket.

thanks, KL. i figured that had to be the case, as any other possible explanation seemed farfetched.

now i just have to learn to live with the knowledge that, contrary to what i'd thought up till now, i actually do have a frankentractor ;)
