Re: Brush hog design

I've had bush hogs with that design on them,it's so the PTO doesn't hit when you raise the
mower, the blade shouldn't get that high to hit unless the bearing was bad or someone didn't
tighten it down all the way.

I knew a Mike Groom at Ft Knox.

I bought a 6 ft section of round baler belt material to mount in front of my 5ft cutter,
Bought this after I hit a stick, cutter flung it out and it hit my ankle, hurt so bad I did not even want to look down, but fortunately only a cut and
bruise,

However that was last year and so far I have not mounted the belt as I must build some type device to extend the belt out front of the cutter
frame to keep the belt out of the blade,

I checked on a factory front guard, it cost over half the cost of the cutter,
Be safe, not lazy like me, hope I do not pay the price of not building the front guard,

Boy this thread is sure screwed up. What a mess modern view makes of these boards.
Anyway,
Tall T you mention needing to make the front chains stand off from the body of the mower to keep the blades from hitting them.
That is exactly correct. I have a model 406 Bush Hog? and that's how they did it on it.
They stand off about 1 1/2"
Front chains are standard. Rears are optional.

You can kinda see it in this photo.

Here's a photo of the rear.

By the way, I really don't see how a mower could flip up onto the operator like is mentioned. If you hit something that hard it would just crumple your top link and hit you anyway.

PS,
I was just looking at the owners manual for my mower and they say a floating toplink is optional.
They don't show a photo of it but I presume it's something like CarryC has on his - which is a great idea.

I'm a little lost here.

Did you start a new thread with the same title?

Were you addressing me about the recess in the front, which I knew was the shaft recess for raising, and about the gash?

thanks,
Terry

Jerry,

Thanks for the feedback on the extended front chains idea.

Very telling that the FRONT chains are the standard and the Rears the option; I'd guess because the operator and tractor are always out front but the odds of someone getting hit from behind with a flying projectile, far less.

When I'm left hanging, it's easy to think, "well so much for that idea."
:D

Thanks for the photos too,
Terry

DG,

Didn't have the tool but it went smoothly enough. :)

I clamped each cross-chain end loop in the vise so the folded ends were accessible. On a few I used a tapered punch to beat them out enough that I could bang a chisel between them

Once opened to where I could get a large screw driver tip in, I just pried them open.

Thanks,
Terry

Mike,

Maybe someone put the blades on upside down, fired it up and went, "DOH!". :)

Or else, the deck climbed up on something, the blade came down on something that drove it upward, and the free play in the big blade mount bolt was just enough slop to let it hit that high.

Anything but the bearing please! :D

Oh, thanks HF.
So that's what UD meant about Modern view.
