8N steering wheel falls off

Have had this about 15 years. The other day I was mowing, did a fairly hard turn, and the steering wheel started rotating on the shaft. I was able to get it back to its shelter.
When I pulled on it, it popped right off.

I'd been wanting to replace it for a long time, but was put off by reports of difficulties getting the wheel off.

So I got new steering wheel, nut, washer. I was able to remove the threaded keyed insert from the old steering wheel and it fits the new steering wheel fine.

But I don't see what holds the steering wheel on. If I get it tightened down as hard as I can, it works for a while, but then the steering wheel starts to just rotate on the shaft, and pulls off easily.

What am I missing ? Don't want to resort to JBWelding it on.

When you put the steering wheel on, there should be threads sticking out above the wheel. Then there should be a large acorn nut to tighten it down

Right. The steering wheel insert which is keyed has threads on the end sticking through the steering wheel and I can put the nut on there. But what keeps the steering wheel column which inserts into the bottom of the steering wheel from just rotating on the shaft ? Do I need to take a BFH to it to make sure it's fully seated ? Reluctant to do that.

How do the splines on the end of the steering shaft look? There should be about 20 teeth on there that lock into the ID teeth on the steering wheel. If the teeth are gone, the wheel will do just as you describe.

It's been a couple years since I took my N wheel off but I don't remember any insert. The threads sticking out the center of the steering wheel should be on the steering column.

When I put a new wheel on my N I took nut and washer off, removed steering wheel and put new in its place. There was nothing to take out of the old wheel and transfer to new wheel.

crap. looks like the top of the steering column that has the keying for the steering wheel plus the threads snapped off the steering column. Now what am I in for ?

If the splines are gone, your best bet might be to find a used steering gear assembly and replace yours. The alternatives get complicated (expensive).

It's a pretty clean break though there is some roughage that might help.

What do you think ? JBWeld ? Brazing ?

Or do I gotta pull the whole steering box ?

Wow, did you break that off the steering shaft?

Might be possible to weld it back on, but JB Weld will never do it.
