OT sprayer roller or 12V pump

Dragged this old homemade sprayer out of the barn. Roller pump leaked so I took it apart and it's rusted so I will have to inspect it closer to see if it
is worth rebuilding. I was going to buy a 3pt 40 gallon fimco but after reading reviews decided not to buy it. probably going to wind up building one
myself. I've read a lot of bad stuff on the 12volt pumps. Anybody here using and liking them Or should I just stick with the roller pump?

Can't comment on the pumps other than I have a roller pump and it works well but you do need to make sure it doesn't rust solid sitting between seasons ;-)

If you ae looking for a boom sprayer it is hard to build one for the cost of a Fimco. What was the knock on the Fimco - just a tube steel frame and all "standard" parts so not much to go wrong?

That said I had a head start on parts and material and built my own spray rig.

Very nice rig Dan. Is yours a 4 or six roller. Any problem with the quick disconnect. I been hearing they strip out. Problems with fimco was tank leak,
pumps and manifold poor quality as well as fittings. Mostly need a spot sprayer but could use a boom in some areas. Basically the way the fimco tank is
attached to the frame with 40 gallons of liquid slogging back and forth caused the tank leak. Spraying on a road or flat surface maybe ok but I have hills
and rough terrain so I was thinking to go with a small tank and a spot sprayer and maybe later add a boom or boomless sprayer section later.

Mine is a low end Hypro 4 roller pump and an older (15+ year old??) 60 gallon TSC poly storage tank with no problems. I limit the tank fill to roughly 40 gallons to keep the 3pt on the Kubby happy and upright. All rough hilly terrain but the tank is well supported on the molded in legs and the Kubby will creep along if asked ;-)

The boom is 1" square steel tubing - 14' coverage with TeeJet (??) spray nozzles, valve, filter, and regulator. I also have a TeeJet spray gun with 50' of hose for fence lines and hard to access areas. If I added it all up I am sure I have more in it than a comparable Fimco rig costs but I had acquired the major bits and pieces along with an old 3pt seeder frame and some good steel angle over time so it was a no brainer to build rather than buy. The boom is great for weed control in open "lawn" areas....

Been using a 12 volt for years. When I worked at Clemson, we kept a spare on hand. Never had to use it. The one I have at home just keeps on pumping.

Dan,
What chemical mix do you use on "lawn areas" for
weed control?
My problem happens to be sticker burrs but am
interested in what you may use for yours.
Thanks,
Greg

I've had a fimco for many years. I don't have any issues but like you say, the pump mounting is flimsy. Mine is hooked to the pump with zip ties. The pump pulls from that tank with a flexible line so it isn't a big deal. It seems like every spring a fitting needs tightened because it dribbles. That is typical of about any pump and sprayer (including my 1000 gallon crop rig!). I like it because it was purpose built and works well. At our farm store they sell all of the replacement parts. I'd buy another.

I use a typical regimen. I broadcast a granular pre-emergent with fertilizer (13-0-0 with .10% Dimension) in early spring primarily for feeding and crab grass control and follow that up with a spray application of generic post emergent broad leaf lawn weed killer (2,4-D and dicamba) in early summer and again in early fall. Works well for my perennial rye turf grass lawn but I am not sure how effective any of those would be on your burr problem.

For fence rows and road weed control I boom/gun spray with glyphosate.

i was told by many, to not use a 12 volt pump on my set up. I went against the advice, and put on a 12 volt 4 gpm pump on it. This is the sprayers 4th summer, and it has been over close to 1500 acres.

It's the number one use for my 8n. When the tank is full, it's a load, but my ground is level.
